UKKO |
|
| The development of the Ukko ice resurface machine started in 1999.
The main target of the project was to build an ice resurface machine
that will be the most developed in the market and uses the latest
technology. Special attention has been paid to safety, ergonomics,
and easiness to use. These qualities are valued highly by the users
of the ice resurface machines. |

The air quality
at indoor rinks is an issue of critical importance for
municipalities, private facilities, and the public in general.
Icecat, the
manufacturer of UKKO, has a solution that will make it possible to
achieve the highest level of safety for indoor air quality in the
industry and is designed to replace ice resurfacers with potentially
dangerous internal combustion engines.
UKKO hybrid
electric ice resurfacers have a positive effect on air quality as
there are no emissions of carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide. As
well, the efficiency and cost savings of using electric power are
superior to conventional fossil fuel models. This technology offers
users, spectators, and taxpayers a healthier and safer environment,
and at a very low cost. UKKO’s electric synergy propulsion unit was
developed jointly by Fortum Energy Finland, Elcat Electric
and Icecat Engineering. |

|
Background |
|
Faced with
growing public concern over the problem of air quality at indoor ice
arenas, the development of an alternative to the internal combustion
engines in ice resurfacers has been a priority at Icecat.
Because
of the air quality in ice arenas is closely monitored by community
health organizations, these buildings are known for the frequency of
their dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide
(NO2). These contaminants can pose a severe risk of poisoning,
especially for those engaged in strenuous physical activity, as the
blood cells have an affinity for CO and therefore any elevated
levels may cause a severe reaction. Children are especially at risk
from these contaminants.
As with any
machinery, system age and maintenance strongly influence
efficiency. This is of critical importance for any fossil fuel
powered ice resurfacer. Air quality problems are continuing to,
force some ice arenas to shut down and in some cases have caused
serious injuries to people inside the building. Liability insurance
coverage is critical and its ever-increasing cost becomes an
increasingly expensive burden.
Fossil fuel
powered ice resurfacers have many other disadvantages that include
operating cost, potential contamination, and more importantly the
danger of refilling and handling of gas cylinders, that may be
hazardous to operators and the public alike. |

Highlights |
|
The Ukko
battery powered hybrid ice resurfacer was first produced in Finland
in 1998 to the highest standards of engineering. The features
listed below are unique to UKKO Ice Resurfacers and all the
components that we use in the UKKO are world class proven and
reliable.
UKKO has a gel dryfit battery cell system with a 400 amp/hr 80 volt
gel battery pack manufactured by Exide, the world’s largest battery
manufacturer. These batteries are recyclable, maintenance free and
manufactured in compliance with Underwriter Laboratories standards.
There is no need for ventilation during recharging thus eliminating
the cost and exposure for air handling as found in our competitors’
models. Cells are maintenance free (no need for operators to verify
cell water levels or to refill them). This advanced technology
eliminates the risk of exposure when recharging especially in
confined areas as the risk of acid leaks.
Cells are capable of partial recharging with no memory effect. The
life expectancy of the cells is 5-7 years. Should a cell need to be
replaced the cost of the individual cell is approximately $120.00
per cell.
Batteries are charged by Micropower’s intelligent “battery
maintenance center”, which surveys the condition of the batteries
and charges them accordingly. When fully charged the UKKO can
resurface a typical ice rink at least 20 times a day.
The hybrid battery powered unit with integrated hydrostatic
propulsion is built by Bosch Rexroth the world’s leader in hydraulic
power systems. The hydraulic motion and ice making platform
eliminates loss of power as found in our competitors’ models.
The hydro dynamic independent all wheel drive propulsion unit has
the economical advantages of low operational cost (five times less
than the competition) and lower energy cost due to decreased
building ventilation requirements and reduced maintenance costs
associated with conventional mechanical propulsion units. The two
Hydac hydraulic filters 1-10 micron return line and 1-10 micron
hydrostatic charge loop with 18 gallon capacity insures clean
performance.
Safe operation and maintenance are top priorities for the UKKO and
consist of the following: oversized grab handle, right and left arm
rest, locking integrated seat belt, emergency system lockout, top
mounted shaving blade instillation, auger stop spin valve and shield
charger cord lockout during recharge, headlights and rear safety
light, backup alarm, safety, and warning labels.
